‘Sleeping Out’ event raises funds and awareness about youth homelessness

Dozens of people in Leamington will be sleeping rough to raise awareness and funds for those experiencing homelessness.

It’s called “Sleeping Out” — an annual fundraiser hosted by The Bridge Youth Resource Centre

Friday night is the seventh annual event that is a key to raising awareness about the ongoing issue of youth homelessness in our community and across Canada.

It’s not about replicating homelessness. It’s about empathy, education and action. Participants are challenged to spend one night outside with just a sleeping bag and cardboard either at The Bridge or in their own backyards.

Every dollar raised from pledges made towards the Sleeping Out event supports housing, mental health services and meals for youth in need.

Krista Rempel is the executive director of The Bridge.

“So, we’re hoping to have around 100 people here outside to enjoy the program that we have for this evening,” said Rempel.

“It’s a chance to step inside someone else’s shoes for the night, because everybody that sleeps here at The Bridge just does so with a cardboard box and a sleeping bag and making sure they’re dressed for the weather.”

Monies raised through charitable donations, fundraising events and grants have directly helped The Bridge carry out its mandate to all encompassing services at one primary safe and supportive location for youth ages 14 to 24.

In addition, The Bridge offers recreational activities, social interaction and support services.
