London’s police chief has ordered an investigation after a video surfaced appearing to show officers leaving a restaurant and entering an unmarked police vehicle with alcohol visible inside and a service-issued firearm stored in a manner that raised concerns. In a statement, London Police Service Chief Thai Truong said the incident took place in Toronto on June 24, 2026, following a police funeral. Truong said he personally reviewed the video and immediately directed that the matter be referred to Toronto police for a criminal investigation into the handling and storage of the firearm. Once the criminal investigation is complete, the conduct of the officers involved will also be reviewed under the Community Safety and Policing Act, the statement said. One senior officer has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigations. According to Truong, the decision on suspension should not be viewed as minimizing the seriousness of the allegations, noting that the legislative framework governing police discipline has not met the threshold required for a suspension without pay at this stage. “Police officers are entrusted with significant authority and responsibilities,” said Truong. “With that comes an expectation that we will conduct ourselves in a manner that maintains the confidence of the community we serve.” He added that those expectations apply to all members of the service and are particularly important for officers in leadership positions. Truong said there will be no further comment on the evidence, citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigations, but said additional information would be released when appropriate. No criminal charges have been announced and investigators have not released the identities of the officers involved.
