Manitoba weather: Funnel cloud advisory issued, more rain coming

After severe storms earlier this month dumped staggering amounts of precipitation on southern Manitoba, the last thing needed is more of the same—but that’s what we’re getting Tuesday.

A slow-moving low pressure system has prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue a yellow warning for rainfall for much of the Parkland region.

The weather agency warns that 20-30 mm of rain is expected by around 10 p.m. Tuesday on already very wet ground.

ECCC said a large area of sustained rain will fall on the Dauphin, Minnedosa and Gladstone areas. Rain is expected to ease up and move out of the area this evening.

The weather agency warns water will likely pool in the low-lying areas and that utility outages are possible.

ECCC further warns that landslides could trigger in vulnerable areas, including steep slopes, deforested areas, or recent burn scars.

Meanwhile, the weather agency has also issued a funnel cloud advisory for southwestern regions further south, including Brandon.

ECCC cautions that scattered thunderstorms expected to develop this afternoon in the southwest pose an elevated risk of funnel clouds.

The weather agency said these types of thunderstorms usually are not a danger on the ground. However, if rotation intensifies, a funnel cloud could become a weak landspout tornado.

Winnipeg and the southeast will also get a soaking, though not as much as the southwest.

Still, ECCC said 10-15 mm of rainfall is possible in the city this afternoon, with another 5-10 mm possible tonight.

There is a lower chance of showers continuing on Wednesday as the low departs the region.
