Three security staff at a downtown establishment have been arrested and charged with assault after a star player for the Winnipeg Sea Bears was injured. The Sea Bears said Teddy Allen was assaulted and sent to hospital on Aug. 3, alleging he was attacked by security at a nightclub. The team said his injuries were significant enough that he was going to miss one of their playoff games and might require surgery. On Thursday, police said officers went to a business in the 400 block of Main Street on Aug. 3 for reports of a disturbance. They learned a 28-year-old man at the business was involved in an altercation with security that resulted in him going to the hospital. “The Major Crimes Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation. As a result, three security personnel, aged 35, 37, and 58, were identified as being involved in the assault,” police said in a news release. Police said all three security staff went to police headquarters on Aug. 12 and were arrested. They have been charged with assault causing bodily harm and were released on undertakings. If anyone has more information or video of the incident, they are asked to call police or Crime Stoppers. ‘Should never have happened’ On Thursday afternoon, the Sea Bears released a statement from Teddy Allen. He said he has completed medical tests and is now heading home to heal. Allen said he is sorry he isn’t able to finish the season, but is hoping to be back on the court later in the fall. “While I am not going to go into details right now about my injuries, I do want to acknowledge the Winnipeg Police Service and the investigation undertaken by them. The assault on me should never have happened nor should it happen to anyone for any reason,” he said. “The thing about my life is that when I’ve been knocked down, I get back up which is exactly what I am going to do now.” Allen said he will be cheering on his teammates Saturday as they go for the Sea Bears’ first CEBL championship.
