New Brunswick will build 1,200 new homes through federal partnership

New Brunswick is building hundreds of affordable housing units across the province.

New Brunswick announced it will build more than 1,200 new homes with the federal government through an agreement under the Build Canada Homes program.

“This agreement marks the single-largest investment in affordable housing in New Brunswick’s history,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation.

The cost-matching agreement between the federal and provincial governments will bring approximately $150 million in federal funding to the project, said a news release.

Both levels of government worked to identify projects for funding under the agreement and gave priority to projects that can begin construction within 12 months, said the release.

The federal government says half of all homes will serve lower-income Canadians. A minimum of 160 homes will provide supportive and transitional housing, and 30 per cent will be in smaller and rural centres.

The provincial contribution to the project includes $60 million in capital funding and $90 million in operational funding to support long-term affordability over a 20-year period.

“This agreement is about getting more homes built, faster, so New Brunswickers can find a place they can afford in the communities they love,” said Premier Susan Holt.

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation brought a proposal to Build Canada Homes featuring dozens of affordable housing projects across the province in 2025.

“By combining federal and provincial resources, we’re not only accelerating the delivery of thousands of affordable homes, but we’re also creating a community with schools, childcare and supports that families need to thrive,” said federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

Build Canada Homes launched to increase Canada’s affordable housing supply through partnerships with community and private market developers. The program also helps fight homelessness by building transitional and supportive housing.
