Kori Cheverie will be bringing the Walter Cup to her hometown of New Glasgow, N.S., next week, and the community is invited to celebrate and meet the local hockey star. The head coach of the Montreal Victoire led the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) team to win their first-ever Walter Cup on May 20, when they defeated the Ottawa Charge 4-0. According to Hockey Nova Scotia, Cheverie is the first female head coach to win the PWHL championship, and the Victoire was the first Canadian team to capture the trophy. The Town of New Glasgow will celebrate the achievement with Kori’s Walter Cup Parade at 11 a.m. on July 17, followed by a meet and greet at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. “This is a very special moment for New Glasgow and all of Pictou County,” said Mayor Nancy Dicks in a statement Thursday. “Kori Cheverie continues to be an inspiration both on and off the ice. Her leadership, dedication and accomplishments are something our entire community can be proud of and we are thrilled to welcome her home.” The town says the event will be a procession, rather than a traditional parade, with Cheverie and the Walter Cup travelling through New Glasgow in a vehicle escorted by New Glasgow Police. Police vehicles will lead and follow the procession, while officers manage traffic at intersections. There will be no road closures, but motorists may experience brief delays at some intersections while the procession passes. The procession will head southbound on Provost Street and follow this route: The town says residents can gather on sidewalks along the route to cheer on Cheverie and view the Walter Cup as it passes by. Following the parade, community members are invited to a public meet and greet with Cheverie at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, where they can meet the coach, take photos with the Walter Cup, and bring items to be autographed. The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The procession will be cancelled if it rains, but the meet and greet will proceed as planned.
