The perpetrator of a gruesome murder in Caledon remains a mystery, despite more than a decade of searching and a cash reward. Provincial police say 42-year-old Sonia Varaschin was last seen leaving her parents’ Bolton home on Aug. 29, 2010. The next day, Orangeville OPP discovered Varaschin’s car. Police say on Aug. 30, they found her white Toyota Corolla, abandoned behind a business on Broadway, in downtown Orangeville. OPP then launched an investigation and days later, on Sept. 5, Varaschin’s remains were located in a wooded area just off Beech Grove Sideroad in Caledon. Police ruled her death a homicide and believe Varaschin was targeted by her killer. If she were alive today, Varaschin would be 58-years-old. In the 16 years since, no one has been deemed criminally responsible for her death. 10 years ago, the Province of Ontario got involved, offering a $50,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for her death. In that time, police have repeatedly turned to the public to ask for help. OPP say that under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), the investigation into Varaschin’s murder remains ongoing.
