A seven-year initiative to plant 10,000 trees in Barrie has hit its mark. On Wednesday, environmental group Living Green marked the milestone at Shear Park. Since launching the goal in 2019, the environmental group has worked alongside hundreds of volunteers and donors with the aim to help grow a greener, healthier community. “We have the funds set aside to be able to put trees into the market, this gives a great opportunity for us to find a partner in Living Green to help make sure that they’re planted, they’re planted properly and they’re given the best chance of a healthy life,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall, who was on location for the celebration. The milestone tree was affectionally nicknamed Donna by Living Green Executive Director Andee Pelan. “I decided it was going to be my favourite tree, which is the red oak tree,” Pelan told CTV News. “It’s always a magnificent tree.” “But the other thing with a red oak is it’s one of the species that is adapted really well to a lot of the climate change scenarios that we’re seeing,” Pelan explained.
