Now in its ninth year, Collingwood’s Veterans Banner Program has been embraced by the community that remembers its war heroes. The program was originally launched in 2018 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Now, the program continues to honour local veterans while supporting the Legion’s Poppy Fund. “This banner program is a meaningful way to recognize and honour the sacrifices made by veterans and military families in our community,” said Susan Nicholson, general manager of the Collingwood Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA). “We are proud to support the Legion’s Poppy Fund through this ongoing initiative while providing families, friends, and businesses with an opportunity to celebrate the service, dedication, and legacy of those who have served our country. For many families, these banners are a lasting tribute to loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Nicholson said. The Royal Canadian Legion nationally, the Collingwood Legion Branch 63, and its Ladies Auxiliary all celebrate their 100th anniversary, and 20 new veterans’ banners have been added to the program this year. These additions have generated a $2,000 donation to the Legion’s Poppy Fund. The Collingwood Downtown BIA has covered all production and installation costs associated with the banners. Family, friends, and businesses can recognize and honour a veteran by sponsoring a banner through a $100 donation to the Legion’s Poppy Fund. The banners are proudly displayed on light standards throughout Collingwood’s historic downtown core during the Remembrance Day season.
