Students at Austin O’Brien Catholic High School are grieving the loss of a fellow student who died in a crash over the weekend, the Catholic school board confirms. “Our sincere condolences and prayers are with his family, friends, and school community during this difficult time,” spokesperson Christine Meadows wrote in an email to CTV News Edmonton. “The division’s critical response team was at the school yesterday and this week, providing support to students and staff, and will continue to be available for as long as needed,” she added. “We are committed to supporting the school community with care and compassion in the days ahead.” A Ford Ranger was driving east on Sherwood Park Freeway near 50 Street around 10 a.m. on Sunday when the driver lost control and crossed into the westbound lanes before being struck by an oncoming vehicle. The passenger in the truck, a 17-year-old boy, died at the scene of his injuries. The driver of the truck and the passenger of the oncoming vehicle were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash.
