Southern Ontario is getting a chilly reality check this week, with temperatures expected to tumble to the freezing mark in several communities. Environment Canada issued a yellow frost advisory Monday morning, warning temperatures could dip “below freezing” overnight into early Tuesday. The advisory, issued at 10:26 a.m., carries a moderate impact level and high forecast confidence. Protecting plants and gardens The sudden cold snap could put gardens, trees and crops at risk with frost damage possible. People are being urged to protect cold-sensitive plants, especially in low-lying and frost-prone areas, by covering vulnerable vegetation overnight. The advisory stretches across a large portion of southern Ontario, including Barrie, Collingwood, Caledon, Innisfil, New Tecumseth, Midland, Newmarket, Georgina, Orangeville, Orillia, Owen Sound, the Blue Mountains and several surrounding communities. Hillsdale, Hanover, Dundalk, Angus, Coldwater, Orr Lake, Grand Valley, Lagoon City, Washago, Shelburne and Mansfield are also included, plus parts of Grey and Dufferin counties. The cold start will give way to sunshine Tuesday, according to Environment Canada. Clouds are expected to increase later in the day, followed by a 40 per cent chance of showers Tuesday night.
