Five raids bring home $137K worth of stolen goods

Grey Bruce counties saw a noticeable spike in break and enters and theft-related crimes in the spring.

Two specific people came to light as the Grey Bruce Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) began to check out who they believed could be responsible for a series of property crimes throughout the region.

Less than a month ago, police found several people driving a stolen pickup loaded with stolen property while towing a stolen tractor on the 5th Line in Melancthon.

Two people were arrested without incident, while a third fled the area and was arrested a short time later.

This week, the Grey Bruce, Dufferin, Huron Perth, Brant Oxford, Haldimand, and Norfolk Community Street Crime Units, assisted by members of the Grey Bruce OPP and the West Grey Police Service, executed five raids at these locations:

• A home on Grey Road 4 near Jane Street, Ceylon
• A home on Grey Road 14 near Sideroad S, Grey Highlands
• Two properties on Highway 6 near 18 Sideroad, West Grey
• Property on 6th Line near 18 Sideroad, Melancthon

As a result of the investigation, the following people were arrested and charged with:

A 35-year-old man from Ceylon

• Five counts of operation while prohibited
• Two counts of flight from police
• Dangerous operation
• Failure to stop after accident
• Five counts of break and enter)
• 13 counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• 10 counts of theft over $5,000
• Eight counts of theft of motor vehicle
• Six counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Six counts of knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
• Possession of a firearm obtained by crime
• Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order
• Three counts of failure to comply with probation order
• Three counts of failure to comply with release order

He was held for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody in the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.

A 39-year-old man from Grey Highlands

• Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Six counts of knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
• Possession of a firearm obtained by crime
• Four counts of failure to comply with probation order
• Failure to comply with release order

He was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound and was subsequently released on a court order.

A 35-year-old man of West Grey

• Four counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
• Two counts of theft under $5,000
• Two counts of theft over $5,000
• Theft of motor vehicle
• Flight from police
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
• Possession of a firearm obtained by crime

He was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound, and was later released on a court order.

A 57-year-old man from Ceylon

• Seven counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
• Five counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Five counts of knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on September 24.

A 54-year-old woman of Ceylon

• Seven counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
• Five counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Five counts of knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm

She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on September 24.

A 35-year-old woman of West Grey

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order

She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on October 8.

Investigators have identified and returned, or are in the process of returning, the majority of recovered property to its rightful owners.

The investigation remains ongoing.
