Smile, it’s a red light, and you’re on camera. The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury will soon have red light cameras, a program passed by Town Council in November. There will be eight red light cameras installed, which will go live in September. The Town says the program is being implemented to prevent people from running red lights, to avoid collisions and increase community safety at intersections. “The safety of our residents is always our top priority,” says Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor James Leduc. “Red light cameras will help make our roads safer by encouraging drivers to slow down and obey traffic signals.” The red-light camera system can detect and capture images of vehicles entering an intersection when the traffic light is red. It will take two still shots, which an officer will then review. The registered owner of the vehicle will then receive a penalty order in the mail. The penalties will not impact insurance or give demerit points.
