Firefighters from across the region responded to a garage fire at 509 Nelson Street West in Meaford Tuesday night. “Meaford Fire responded to the report of a structure fire yesterday evening just after 7:30pm,” read a statement from the Meaford Fire Department. “When responding units first arrived, it was confirmed a working structure fire, which also caught the neighbouring house to the east on fire due to wind and initial fire conditions.” The statement says, “Crews battled both house fires until 1:30 a.m. Thankfully, everyone made it out of the structures safely.” More than 35 firefighters responded to assist. “We would like to thank everyone involved with assisting us: Municipality of Meaford, Hydro One, Ontario Provincial Police - West Region, Grey County EMS, Inter Township Fire Department Serving Georgian Bluffs and Meaford, Town of Blue Mountains Fire Department and Grey Highlands Fire & Emergency Services- who staffed our fire hall while all of our trucks responded. After a long cleanup and equipment checks to ensure our trucks and staff were ready for the next call, it was time to go home at 3 a.m. And, there is the gratitude from the neighbours who watched homes in their neighbourhood burn uncontrollably. “A major thank you to our firefighters for all of their efforts in last night’s two home blaze on upper Nelson Street. Fire crews from the Blue Mountains, Inter Township Fire Department and Meaford battled the blaze well into the night,” said neighbour Shirley Keaveney. “We are so fortunate to be served by our many well-trained volunteer firefighters,”
