Nominations open Saturday for the right to be named the official dog of the 2026 Grey Cup Festival. Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment district (The C+E) are hosting a watch party for the Labour Day rematch between the Stampeders and Edmonton Elks Saturday at Pixel Park and using that event as a different kind of kickoff: accepting nominations for the third annual dog mayor election. “Canines of all shapes and sizes are invited to put their paws in the running to become the next elected dog mayor of the C+E,” a media release stated. “This year there is even more to bark about: the top dog will win a second title as the official dog of the Cenovus Energy Grey Cup Festival.” Over the first two years, 69 dogs have been nominated, and over 20,600 ballots cast, The C+E said. “The dog mayor serves an important role as ambassador for the district,” said Joanna Pesta, CMLC’s senior manager of programming and events. “Whether they’re greeting residents at community events, championing dog-friendly amenities or inspiring new connections between the people who live, visit and work in The C+E, the dog mayor helps make the district feel welcoming and vibrant for residents and visitors alike.” Grey Cup Festival director of marketing and communications Christina Bullock added that, “Giving this year’s dog mayor an extra-special title and the chance to join in the Grey Cup Festival fun is another great way to bring our community together and build excitement for what’s ahead this November.” Last year’s winner Mud Pi, who has completed his one-year term as mayor, will be on hand at the Saturday event. This year’s election will only accept in-person nominations. Saturday’s event will offer free dog portraits. Nominations will be accepted through Sept. 27, with online voting in the primaries through Oct. 11. At that point, the Top 10 will be selected, with a new dog mayor named Oct. 27. The new dog mayor will have their portrait displayed at Pixel Park, receive a custom dog tag and mayoral sash, a custom dog ice cream flavour and Paws in Colour pet portrait provided by Village Ice Cream. It will also be invited to appear in Grey Cup promotional material including photos and social media and to participate in Grey Cup Festival and C&E District events.
