Police in Waterloo Region responded to to eight impaired driving incidents across the region in just over 12 hours, resulting in 14 impaired-related charges. Police said the incidents happened between 1 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday in Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Wilmot Township. In Cambridge, officers were called to Elgin Street North and Winter Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Friday for a two-vehicle collision involving a Chevrolet Cruze and a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The 42-year-old Cambridge woman driving the Chevrolet was charged with operation while impaired, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a weapon and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Just after midnight Saturday, police received reports of a Mazda sedan swerving and driving on the wrong side of Gingerich Road in Baden. Officers located the vehicle in New Hamburg and attempted to stop it. Police said the driver backed into a cruiser, causing minor damage. The 48-year-old Wilmot Township woman driving the Mazda was charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration and dangerous operation. Police also arrested drivers for impaired driving near Riverside Park in Cambridge, in the Pioneer Park area of Kitchener and in Uptown Waterloo. In all, police said 14 charges related to impaired driving were laid during the 14-hour period. “Thank you to community members for your assistance in these investigations. If you suspect an impaired driver, please call 9-1-1 immediately,” police said in a media release.
