Alberta’s Ministry of Forestry and Parks says a dog owner is facing multiple charges after their dog killed a mule deer in Canmore earlier this week while off-leash. The Town of Canmore said in a social media post that an off-leash golden retriever attacked and killed the mule deer near the Canmore Engine Bridge on Sunday between 10 and 11 a.m. Municipal law enforcement attended the scene, and officers have been in touch with the dog owner, who was described as a woman wearing a black puffy jacket who left with the dog. A statement from the province’s Ministry of Forestry and Parks on Thursday said the owner has since come forward and has been interviewed by conservation officers. “We can confirm that the individual has been charged with multiple offences under the Provincial Parks Act, all of which require a mandatory court appearance,” ministry spokesperson Riley Gough wrote. Gough did not share the owner’s identity. He added conservation officers will work with the RCMP and Town of Canmore regarding any further charges that might be required. “It is critical that pets remain leashed and under control at all times while in provincial parks,” Gough said.
