Content warning: Details in this story may be disturbing to some readers The trial of a Quebec man accused of second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Josianne Faucher, got underway in Longueuil, Que. On Thursday, the jury was shown more excerpts from the seven-hour interrogation video, taken shortly after David Tota, 40, was arrested for Faucher’s murder. Faucher was found dead in the apartment she shared with Tota on Toulouse Street in Candiac, Que., in April 2024. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed 62 times. Tota was charged with second-degree murder. The prosecutor’s case will focus on the accused’s state of mind in the moments leading up to her killing. During the police interrogation, Tota admitted to stabbing Faucher, but only three times. He said they had a tumultuous relationship, and had broken up but were still living together. The jury saw surveillance footage of the two at a restaurant on the night of April 8. Tota told the investigator that they had sex later that night, but an argument broke out. He said that’s when he went into the kitchen, got a knife, and stabbed her. In the interrogation video, he said he saw black and didn’t even know what he was doing. He said he then left the apartment in a panic, not knowing where to go. He then drove to a strip club and went to Trudeau Airport, where he dropped off his car and took a taxi to a nearby motel. In the video, the interrogator asked him to draw a picture of the knife, which has still not been found. The prosecution presented video surveillance evidence to pinpoint Tota’s movements that night. Some of the victim’s family attended Thursday’s court proceedings but did not wish to speak to the media. The trial continues on Friday.
