Calgary police are investigating after a shooting outside the Genesis Centre left one person seriously injured late Tuesday night. Officers say a man in his 20s, who appeared to have been shot, was dropped off at the Peter Lougheed Centre around 10 p.m. Shortly after, police traced the shooting scene to the 7500 block of Falconridge Boulevard N.E., directly in front of the Genesis Centre. CPS Duty Insp. Darren Smith told reporters Wednesday morning the shooting happened after the driver of a vehicle got into an altercation with a group of people in the parking lot outside the community centre. “At some point, the driver exited the vehicle and fired rounds toward the group, striking one male in his 20s,” Smith said. “His friends then took him to the hospital, where he was in stable condition.” Enoc Interaino, who lives several blocks away from the Genesis Centre, says he heard several shots around 10:20 p.m. “Around six to seven shots,” said Interaino. “I feel like we are in a city or country where this shouldn’t be an issue.” Investigators believe the shooting happened outside the community facility. Gurgat Sandhu lives across from the community centre and is concerned. “We have kids. They are playing outside,” said Sandhu. Jitendra Punjabi is another concerned resident. “It’s pretty worrisome because I thought we were living in a very safe and sound society,” said Punjabi. “I would not imagine something like this happening in such a place.” Police say the suspects were seen in a stolen vehicle before fleeing the area on foot. The victim was later transported to the Foothills Medical Centre and is listed in serious but stable condition. No arrests have been confirmed, and the investigation is ongoing.
