A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old female have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl on Lakeshore Drive on M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island on Monday. The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service said officers responded to a request from emergency medical services on Aug. 17, to attend the residence regarding a severely injured person. “Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old female who was deceased,” the First Nation police service said in a news release Tuesday. UCCM Anishnaabe police said the scene was secured and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death was initiated. No ongoing threat to public safety “Police believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety,” the service said. Police also extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Accuseds held in custody Both accused were held in custody pending court appearances. The 19-year-old accused faces two additional charges of failing to comply with a release order. Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, no further details will be released regarding the circumstances surrounding the death at this time.
