Calgary’s Lougheed House has announced a full lineup of events in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Built in 1891, Lougheed House is a national and provincial historic site with more than 135 years of history. “Fall, and especially Halloween, is a special season at Lougheed House,” said executive director Shannon Murray in a news release. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the roots of how contemporary Canada marks Halloween, the origins of wearing costumes, carving pumpkins and even saying ‘trick or treat’ — which our research shows a 1917 reference, 10 years earlier than most other records show!” Visitors to the Beltline venue will be able to take advantage of a variety of free and low-cost activities, including: Tricks, Treats & Traditions: A History of Halloween in Southern Alberta Currently underway, the free outdoor pop-up exhibit is on display in the gardens at Lougheed House until Nov. 5. It features photos, newspaper clippings and fun facts on the history of Halloween and its practices in the province. Pranks, Parties and Pumpkins: A Halloween History Tour Lougheed House staff take guests on a guided tour of all three floors of the historic mansion, exploring some of the memorable Halloween parties thrown in Calgary. Tickets are on sale for tours on Oct. 13, 20, 22, 25 and 27. Trick or Trivia Night Guests are invited to test their knowledge of iconic horror movies and TV shows, as well as Halloween history, at this adults-only event.
