Inquest to look into death of teen shot and killed in Sask. police station after grabbing officer’s gun A public inquest will be held next month looking into the death of a teenager shot and killed in a Saskatchewan police station in Nov. 2023. The purpose of a death inquest is to establish the facts of the incident, including the medical cause and manner of death. Justice Guillas, who was 19 at the time of his death, was arrested by Estevan Police Service (EPS) on Nov. 1, 2023. It came after officers and paramedics were called to an apartment on the 1200 block of Sixth Street around 6:40 a.m. Police found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim - 46-year-old Karie Ann Guillas - later died from her injuries. A 19-year-old man was found covered in blood and was taken into custody. Although not named in the report, the suspect was identified as the victim’s son, Justice Guillas. A Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) investigation in 2025 found, while inside the police station, Guillas grabbed an officer’s pistol and fired a shot, hitting the officer in the abdomen. A second officer fired two shots, hitting Guillas. Both the officer who had been shot, Sgt. Braden Lonsberry, as well as Guillas, were taken to hospital. Guillas died later that day. Lonsberry was released from the hospital a few days later. An autopsy found Guillas had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death. Eleven police officers and two civilians were interviewed as part of SIRT’s investigation. SIRT concluded the second officer was justified in shooting Guillas, and no charges were laid. The inquest is scheduled to run Nov. 2-6 at the Western Star in Estevan, with Coroner Brent Gough set to preside. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths. - With files from Mick Favel and David Prisciak
