We now know what’s moving into the space previously occupied by the Hudson’s Bay at Calgary’s Southcentre Mall. A new Walmart Supercentre will open in the location in 2028. The new two-level store will be approximately 165,000 square feet and will serve as an anchor tenant for the shopping centre. The store will include a full grocery store, home goods, a pharmacy and a vision centre. “This new supercentre will help bring even more convenient access to our customers in south Calgary, welcoming them to our one-stop-shop within the Southcentre Mall,” Walmart Canada spokesperson Shawn Fujiki said. Southcentre Mall is owned and operated by Oxford Properties. Spokesperson Tori Nixon says they’re thrilled to welcome Walmart to the mall. “Oxford has a multi-decade-long track record of successfully reimagining retail spaces and evolving our shopping centres to meet changing customer needs and expectations,” Nixon said. “Walmart’s arrival at Southcentre reflects our proven ability to adapt and evolve our centres in response to changing market dynamics, transforming space into compelling new opportunities that strengthen the retailer mix, enhance the customer experience and reinforce the long-term success of the property.” In 2025, Walmart Canada announced a $6.5 billion investment over the next five years to expand its store and supply chain footprint across the country. The Calgary Southcentre Walmart Supercentre marks the fourth new supercentre planned for Alberta as part of the investment. Another of the new supercentres — located in Tsuut’ina Nation — is expected to open in 2027.
