A B.C. Conservative candidate is calling on Elections B.C. to investigate an NDP mailout he claims misleads voters. The letter in question was written by family physician Dr. Habib Ur-Rehman, who recently arrived in B.C. from the U.K. and is now working at a West Vancouver clinic. Ur-Rehman wrote that one of the reasons he came to B.C. was because of a government that listened to doctors and would take action. The letter goes on to say: “The B.C. Conservatives would take us the other way. They’ve admitted health care and education are going to have to take the brunt of their cuts.” Courtenay-Comox candidate Brennan Day says the NDP’s formatting of the letter was deceitful. “It’s clearly intentionally designed to be misleading to voters,” Day told CTV News. He points out that the logo on the envelope is very similar to that of Elections B.C., and the only indication that it is an authorized message from the B.C. NDP is in fine print at the bottom of the letter. “This propaganda definitely has the ability to misinform voters,” said Day. At a campaign event Tuesday, B.C. NDP Leader David Eby said he felt it was obvious the letter came from his party. “I think that people understand that that was a message that is promoting the B.C. NDP, because this doctor believes we’re the best for health care,” said Eby. SFU associate professor of political science Edana Beauvais believes the party could have made it clearer that the letter was sent by them. “If it is coming from the NDP, that should be really front and centre. People shouldn’t have to guess,” she said. “If it’s not apparent that it’s partisan campaign material and it’s made to look like it’s from Elections B.C., I think that’s a case where there’s deception, and that is problematic.” Day points out that his riding was decided by just 93 votes in the 2024 election, so this type of potentially misleading information can be costly. “I’m concerned about the people that, quite frankly, don’t know better,” Day said. CTV News has reached out to Elections B.C. for comment but has not yet received a response.
