The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved a sixth area code for Alberta. The CRTC said the province needed a new area code by 2029 to keep the region from running out of phone numbers. As a result, it directed the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA), which it oversees, to chair an ad hoc committee to develop a plan to relieve the situation. In its decision published on Tuesday, the CRTC said it had approved a recommendation by the CNA to implement a new area code for Alberta starting June 10, 2028. The new area code will be 568. Alberta is currently served by the area codes 368, 403, 587, 780, and 825.
