The City of Edmonton is bringing shared e-scooters and e-bikes to Mill Woods as part of a parking and safety pilot project. The southeast neighbourhood is one of the last areas/communities to get the green light on shared micromobility. “We’re excited to bring shared e-scooters and e-bikes to Mill Woods, while also using the pilot to test new ways to improve safety and parking,” said Jordana Kulchar, general supervisor of planning and permitting with the city. As part of the program, the city has established specific parking and operating zones for shared e-scooters and e-bikes, which includes a series of bike lanes and shared pathways. Mill Woods Road will also be accessible to connect riders to parks, pathways and recreation centres. Designated riding areas are implemented in an effort to get rides to travel along active transportation corridors while discouraging sidewalk riding and keeping riders a safe distance from vehicles. Users will be required to park e-scooters and e-bikes in designated parking spots located at major intersections and near transit stops. Most corrals will be within 200 metres of each other and about 500 metres from residential areas. “Mill Woods was selected for the pilot because there was strong community interest and because it gives us a great opportunity to test new operating requirements,” said Kulchar.
