Court saw more delays Tuesday in a second-degree murder trial that started at the end of January. Justin Bone, accused of killing two men in Chinatown in 2022, once again fired his lawyer and then refused to finish testifying. Bone’s trial was to resume that morning until the justice was informed he wasn’t brought to the courthouse from the Edmonton Remand Centre. The justice ordered Bone be transported immediately then was told his lawyer had been fired. “Late Friday Mr. Bone discharged me again, so I’m going to have to speak with him again,” David Wolsey told the court. Wolsey is at least the fourth lawyer Bone has fired since being charged. He has fired Wolsey at least three times. “He’s been told already that if he discharges you, I’m not adjourning this trial,” said the judge. The trial resumed a few hours later upon Bone’s arrival. Wolsey informed the court he wasn’t fired, but said Bone does not wish to continue giving testimony in chief. The Crown now needs time for its own expert to review toxicological and psychology reports done for the defence before being ready to cross-examine Bone. Tuesday’s delays mean additional court time will have to be scheduled in order to finish the trial. The justice is still hoping to keep things on track so he can deliver a verdict in early January, nearly a year after the trial started.
