A deer has been killed after being struck by a vehicle in Barrie earlier this month. Police say in the early morning of Oct. 15 at around 6:25 a.m., they got a call about a pickup truck that had collided with a deer in the Reid Road and McKay Road area. The driver of the truck, a 27-year-old man, was not injured in the crash. “Collisions with deer can happen quickly and without warning and can cause significant vehicle damage, and, in some cases, injuries,” Barrie police say in a release. Barrie police are advising the public of how to avoid collisions with wildlife. They encourage drivers to slow down, scan the road and use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic. Motorists may see more deer at this time of year around dusk and dawn throughout October and November, as it’s their mating and migration seasons. Police say if drivers encounter a deer on the road, they recommend braking firmly, as opposed to swerving, which can lead to losing control of the vehicle. Authorities advise honking and flashing headlights to alert the deer to move off the road. Police say if you’re involved in a collision with a deer, don’t approach an injured deer as they can become unpredictable when they’re in a frightened state. “Take a moment to calm down, because these incidents can happen unexpectedly and be shocking,” Barrie police say. If there is immediate danger like a deer or vehicle creating a road hazard, call 911.
