A 22-year-old Waterloo man is facing four charges after a collision involving a red Toyota and a commercial truck in Waterloo last week, with cellphone video showing construction workers intervening as the driver allegedly tried to flee in another vehicle. Waterloo Regional Police said officers responded to Columbia Street West and Lester Street at about 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of a collision involving the Toyota and a commercial truck. Video recorded by a neighbour showed the red car overturned, with another vehicle resting on top of it. Construction workers could be seen rushing to help at the scene. “Following the collision, the driver of the Toyota attempted to flee the scene by climbing into the driver’s seat of a nearby construction truck,” police said in a media release. “Workers in the area intervened and detained the male driver until police arrival.” The video showed one worker removing his hardhat and climbing through the open driver’s-side window of a parked pickup truck, followed by other workers who joined in trying to remove the driver. Both vehicles involved in the collision sustained heavy damage. Police said the driver suffered minor injuries and no major physical injuries were reported. The 22-year-old was arrested and charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, dangerous operation, attempted motor vehicle theft and failure to stop after an accident. Police said the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
