Two thieves were caught on camera stealing 18 “distinctive” Porsche rims from a Guelph business. Security video showed a man, walking a bike, approach Restoration Design Inc. on Hayes Avenue at 2 a.m. on Tuesday. The business specializes in metal fabrication, including custom signage and decorative panels, as well as classic Porsche cars. Police said the man took a look around and then left. A short time later, he returned to Restoration Design Inc. with a second person. The pair entered the business and were seen walking around inside. In full view of the security camera, the two thieves grabbed the rims one-by-one from a metal shelf and then carried them off. Alex deJonge, the vice-president at Restoration Design Inc., said his staff reached out to a local scrap metal dealer to see if any of the rims had turned up there. “[They] said they would keep an eye out, but my employee decided to visit their business to see if he could speak to someone in the yard,” deJonge explained in an email to CTV News. “My employee then noticed one gold rim that he knew was one of ours and, after checking with the [dealer’s] employee, they realized all the rims were there and had been brought in for scrap money by a known suspect.” The rims were then returned to Restoration Design Inc. While no descriptions were provided, the security video showed the suspects wearing jackets, with their hoods pulled up, as well as backpacks. Anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to contact Constable Matt Simpson at 519-824-1212, ext. 7318, or email msimpson@guelphpolice.ca.
