A new chapter in economic and community development has begun in the Township of Black River-Matheson as construction on a new motel is underway. The development, led by RCC Global Services, is being built on the site of the former municipal office. A groundbreaking ceremony on June 17 brought together municipal leaders, contractors, and residents who say the project is a symbol of renewed confidence in the community. “That’s what we’ve been working towards,” said town mayor Dave Dyment. The new motel is expected to help address a long-standing shortage of accommodations in the area, which has made it difficult to attract tournaments, festivals and other community events. “We’re going to be able to start bringing back events for everybody,” said Dyment. Brian Peever, president of the Matheson Curling Club, said the lack of rooms has been a major barrier for local events. “When we do our annual Beer Fest, there’s no places for people to stay in the community at the moment. Without a motel, it hinders the process,” said Peever. Lisa McIntyre, director of recreation for Matheson, said the return of local minor hockey and the possibility of weekend tournaments and festivals will be significantly supported by the new development. “To be able to have people stay, it’s just amazing to be a part of that,” said McIntyre. Annette Meyers, a local resident, said the development could help reverse population decline. “This town is going to start booming, which it needs,” Meyers said. “A lot of the young people have left because there was nothing here for them. Now with motels and new businesses, it’ll bring more people into town.” Another resident, Dean Friese, said he is encouraged by the direction the municipality is taking. “The new council seems to be bringing the town ahead with all of these new investments going on,” he said. Construction is expected to begin immediately, with the first phase including 22 rooms. Developers told CTV News there is potential for expansion if demand continues to grow. “They are always open to discussions, and we truly appreciate all the support that we are getting in every sense,” said RCC representative Mandvi Gupta. Residents will also be invited to take part in a public contest to name the new motel, an initiative designed to encourage community involvement and local pride in the development. In addition to the motel project, the community is also seeing other new investments with a coffee shop, a restaurant, a fuel station and a childcare facility all slated to be built.
