OPP warn public of Rogers cellphone scam

Ontario Provincial Police and other police services in northern Ontario are warning the public about a major Rogers wireless scam that has been reported in Greater Sudbury throughout the Algoma District, including Elliot Lake.

OPP said the scam involves criminals calling customers about a fake phone upgrade, having a real device delivered to the customer’s home and then tricking the customer into mailing it back to a fraudulent address.

How the device return scam works

1. Initial call: The scammer calls and already has the customer’s real account details, so they sound legitimate.
2. The offer: They offer a special loyalty deal, plan upgrade or bundled discount.
3. Action: They have the customer go onto the Rogers website and order a new device.
4. Real delivery: A real phone or tablet arrives at the customer’s home through their actual account.
5. The fake return: The scammer calls back the next day and claims a shipping mistake or wrong colour was sent.
6. The theft: They email a fake return shipping label. When the device is mailed back, it goes to the criminal instead of Rogers, leaving the customer with the bill.

‘Awareness is key’

“There are so many types (of scams) out there but the better educated the public are, the less chance they have to fall victim to these ruthless scammers,” said community engagement officer Phil Young.

“Don’t keep it a secret - talk to a friend, family member, neighbour, or police before making any decisions to send money to people you don’t know.”

How to protect yourself

• Hang up: Never trust unsolicited callers who ask you to verify account details.
• Verify directly: Call your wireless carrier using the official phone number printed on your monthly bill, rather than a number a caller gives you.
• Reject return labels: Never use a shipping return label sent via an unexpected email or phone call.
• Review official guidelines: Check the wireless carrier’s official website for process guides or fraud and security tips.
• Report fraud: Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if you lose money or data.

“If you believe that someone is posing as a fraudster on the phone, just hang up,” said police.

OPP added that incidents can also be reported through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and anyone who is a victim of a fraud or scam should contact their local police agency.
