Police are investigating two false reports of an active shooter last week in Killbear Provincial Park. The incidents are known as ‘swatting,’ in which false reports of a serious incident are called in to police, prompting a major response to an unsuspecting location. In a news release Oct. 7, West Parry Sound Provincial Police said officers responded “to a report of an active shooter at Killbear Provincial Park in Carling Township.” “Officers confirmed that no incident took place,” the release said. “The provincial communication centre of the Ontario Provincial Police in Orillia also received a similar call to Bass Lake Provincial Park at the same time.” Both incidents are under investigation and police said further information will be released at a later time.
