Police in Blind River are investigating an incident that took place involving a youth in a washroom during a hockey game last weekend at the Blind River Community Centre. The incident took place toward the end of the first period of a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game involving the Blind River Beavers and the Elliot Lake Vikings. “The incident reportedly occurred shortly before the end of the first period when a youth was using a washroom at the arena,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a Sept. 14 news release. “Three adult males were also present in the washroom and one of the males made an inappropriate comment to the youth. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the interaction, and efforts are underway to identify the involved males.” When asked if the comment was racist or sexual in nature, OPP spokesperson Cont. Bev Gauthier said in an email that “it wasn’t racist.” The youth then “reported to an adult who then reported to police,” Gauthier said. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information that could help with the investigation to contact the East Algoma OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Use Occurrence No. E261332043. “The OPP encourages parents and guardians to speak with their children about personal safety and the importance of reporting any interaction that makes them feel uncomfortable,” police said. “Youth should be reminded to seek assistance from a trusted adult, coach, parent, or event staff member if they ever feel unsafe or encounter a situation that causes concern.” Police added that parents and guardians are encouraged to remain engaged during community events and “remind youth that they can report any concerning behaviour, comments, or interactions without fear of getting in trouble.” “Prompt reporting allows police to assess the circumstances and take appropriate action when necessary,” the release said.
