Police in Sudbury have issued an arrest warrant for a man seen in security camera footage abusing a dog in the city. The video circulating on social media shows a man in a light blue jacket and a black backpack stepping on the dog’s head and abusing the pup for several minutes. In an Aug. 20 news release, police said they were alerted to the incident around 6:50 p.m. Aug. 19. “A video depicting the assault, which appeared to involve a lone individual, had been circulated on social media,” police said. “Through the course of the investigation, officers obtained CCTV footage of the incident and identified the individual believed to be responsible.” The animal was seized at a residence on Lourdes under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act. “The dog was removed from the residence and transported to a local veterinary clinic for assessment and care,” the release said. “The individual believed to be responsible was not present at the residence. As a result, investigators have applied for an arrest warrant.” Police are working with animal welfare inspectors “as the investigation progresses,” the release added.
