The Government of Saskatchewan is offering support after a deadly explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. The incident happened Saturday around 4 p.m., killing four people and leaving dozens injured, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney. “Saskatchewan has deployed resources to Alberta and is ready to provide more if required to assist in responding to the serious incident at CFB Wainwright,” Premier Scott Moe wrote in a Saturday evening social media post. “Our hearts are with all those affected at CFB Wainwright and in the surrounding communities, as well as the first responders and those on the front lines of this tragic incident.” In a separate statement Sunday morning, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) said it was made aware of the incident last night and is ready to provide support upon request. Carney called the incident one of the worst tragedies for the Canadian Forces on Canadian soil during peace time. Speaking to media Sunday, the prime minister said he requested that a detailed account and formal briefing be provided Sunday afternoon by senior officials on the ground. In an email to CTV News, STARS Air Ambulance confirmed that it was involved in the multi-agency response to the incident. As of Sunday afternoon, STARS did not have details available on the number of patients that were transported by the service specifically, but said the response included aircraft and crews from its Edmonton, Saskatoon and Calgary bases. “I want to take a moment to thank Saskatchewan’s incredible frontline healthcare workers who have stepped in to help care for soldiers injured from CFB Wainwright,” said NDP Leader Carla Beck in a social media post. In an email to CTV News, the Saskatchewan Health Authority said it was in contact with its Alberta counterparts to coordinate potential patient transfers to Saskatchewan if needed. However, as of 2:05 p.m., no patients had been transferred to Saskatchewan. “The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) extends our sincere condolences to everyone impacted by the tragic incident at CFB Wainwright,” the email read. “... We remain prepared to provide support as needed.” With files from Sierra D’Souza Butts More to come ...
