Greater Sudbury has announced that Dan Bergeron of Fauxreel Studios will lead the city’s effort to design and build a permanent Crosses for Change installation. “Through the city’s Public Art Program, Bergeron has been selected to lead the development of the installation,” officials said in a news release July 23. “Before any design work begins, Bergeron will work with a project working group and engage families, community organizations, people with lived experience and other community partners to help shape the final concept. Listening, learning, working together “The strength of this project will come from the people whose experiences and perspectives help inform it,” Bergeron is quoted as saying in the news release. “I’m looking forward to listening, learning and working together to create a memorial that reflects the significance of this place.” “Crosses for Change began as a way to honour the lives of people we have lost and to remind everyone that every one of those lives mattered,” Denise Sandul, founder of Crosses for Change, said in the release. “Knowing this work will continue as a permanent place of reflection means so much to the families and community members who have found comfort at the current location over the years. I’m grateful to everyone who has helped move this project forward, and I look forward to assisting with the project and the final outcome.” The permanent installation will be located in Carleton Park and developed alongside the Paris-Notre-Dame Bikeway Project, which includes new pathways, lighting and site enhancements. Infrastructure required to support the future installation will also be incorporated into the park improvements, the city said. The goal is to have the installation completed in 2027.
