A Timmins woman is celebrating a major milestone – Peggy Atkinson turned 100 years old surrounded by family, friends and a few surprises at the Timmins and District Hospital’s Alternate Level of Care Unit in the St. Mary’s Gardens building. Atkinson was born in England and came to Canada with her family in 1932 during the Great Depression. Her father took a job at the Hollinger Gold Mine in Timmins and the city has been home ever since. Surprise celebration For her birthday, Atkinson expected it to be just another regular day. “We talked to her the other day and we’re like, ‘what do you have planned for your She’s like, ‘absolutely nothing. It’ll be another typical day,’” said Anne Arseneault, a personal support worker. “We woke her up at 10 this morning and she realized it wasn’t a typical other day.” Instead, Peggy was welcomed with a room full of family, friends and well-wishers who came out to celebrate the her centennial. Arseneault said reaching 100 years old is a special occasion. “We unfortunately, working in health care, we sometimes we don’t have people that will make it to 100. So just with it being a huge milestone, we had to celebrate,” she said. Peggy’s secret to a long life When asked about the secret to a long life, Atkinson and her sons credited healthy living, staying optimistic and enjoying good food. For Atkinson, that includes a favourite meal. “Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding,” she said. Atkinson has three sons and the family told CTV News that some of their best memories were made during camping trips across North America. Her son Alan said staying active and having company have helped his mother over the years. He visits her every day. “Getting outside helps. I mean, there’s nothing worse than being lonely, right?” said Alan. Peggy’s son Brian said seeing so many people come together to celebrate made the day even more special. “When you see a day like this and this many people show up, it’s very special,” said Brian. The celebration also included a visit from Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau and staff members presented Peggy with gifts. “I’m surprised. I didn’t expect this,” Atkinson said. Heartwarming finale The day wrapped up with caregivers singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Peggy as she celebrated 100 years surrounded by the people who love and care about her.
