Aunor Beach, the McDonald Lake waterfront that reopened in June after nearly a decade of being off-limits to the public, will be closed Wednesday while the Timmins Police Service conducts an evidence search in the area. Timmins police are asking residents to avoid the beach, located along Gold Mine Road roughly halfway between Timmins and South Porcupine. Officers advised that access will be restricted for the duration of the operation. Investigation underway Police have not disclosed the nature of the evidence they are seeking or whether the search is connected to a specific ongoing case. “The closure is necessary to allow investigators to safely and thoroughly conduct the search,” the local police service said in a news release. Investigators are asking members of the public to respect the closure and stay clear of the area while the work is carried out, police said. Recent refurbishment Discovery Mining reopened the beach in June after overseeing a series of upgrades, including an improved access road, expanded parking, a refreshed walking trail and a new beachfront design. The site also features bear-proof waste bins, washroom facilities and updated signage. The beach has been operating daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. since June 19, with the company saying security staff have been escorting visitors off the property before the gates close each evening. “Discovery is pleased to help provide a safe, accessible, and enjoyable outdoor space for our community to enjoy this summer,” the company said in a social media post announcing the beach’s reopening. Authorities did not indicate when the beach would reopen or how long they expect the search to take. “Further information will be provided when appropriate,” police said.
