A pair of men who fled police from the streets of Regina to a set of train tracks near Lumsden are facing numerous charges. Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 2, officers in the area of Victoria Avenue and Athol Street spotted a stolen vehicle driving dangerously. Reportedly reaching speeds of up to 180 km/h inside city limits, the officers on the ground decided not to pursue and instructed the service’s aerial unit to track it from the sky. The dangerous driver headed south of the city, speeding down various grid roads before heading towards Lumsden. While inside the town, the driver continued travelling at high speeds, nearly colliding head on with several vehicles in the process. At this point, the vehicle then turned onto a set of train tracks and attempted to drive down them. A photo provided by police show the vehicle travelling down what appears to be a rail bridge. After what police called a short distance, the driver lost control and flew off a steep embankment. The two suspects got out of the vehicle and fled the scene. Both Mounties and Regina police officers responded to the scene. One suspect was found hiding in some bushes near the crash scene. According to police, he refused to follow officers’ orders and assaulted a police dog. He was eventually bit by the dog and taken into custody. The second suspect, who was the driver, was found in a building in the area and arrested without incident. He was taken to hospital to be treated for the minor injuries he sustained in the crash. The driver, a 42-year-old man, was charged with possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000, operating a vehicle dangerous to the public, operating a vehicle while prohibited, and breaking and entering with intent. The driver was also arrested on outstanding warrants, police say. The passenger, a 32-year-old man, was charged with resisting arrest and possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000. Both men made their first appearances in court on Sept. 2.
