Ontario’s auto insurance coverages have changed, giving drivers more choice and control over their Accident Benefits. As of July 1, 2026, some Accident Benefits that were previously included in Ontario auto insurance policies are now optional. This gives you more flexibility to choose the level of protection that fits your needs and your family. If you’re reviewing your auto insurance, here’s what you should know about the changes and your Accident Benefits. What are Accident Benefits? Accident Benefits are coverages that ensure you have support if you’re injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of who was at fault. These benefits can help with things like medical care, income replacement and more. Some Accident Benefits are built right into your Ontario auto insurance policy, while others are available at an additional cost. Some Accident Benefits, like Standard Medical, Rehabilitation and Attendant Care Benefits continue to be included with every auto insurance policy. Coverage provides up to $3,500 for minor injuries, up to $65,000 for non-catastrophic injuries (shared with Attendant Care) and up to $1 million for catastrophic injuries. Other Accident Benefits are now optional and can be added or removed based on your needs, giving you greater, personalized protection. What Accident Benefits can you add? While those benefits are still mandatory, you can tailor your policy with additional coverage based on your circumstances and the level of protection you want.
