Quebecers are heading to the polls on Monday to vote in the province’s next government, ending two straight Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) majority governments. The Parti Québécois (PQ), which hasn’t been in power since former premier Pauline Marois’ minority government dissolved in 2014, is leading the way despite Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon pledging to launch a referendum on sovereignty if U.S. President Donald Trump leaves the White House in 2029. PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is facing off against a large field that includes CAQ Leader Christine Fréchette, Liberal (PLQ) Leader Charles Milliard, Québec solidaire co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal and Quebec Conservative (PCQ) Leader Éric Duhaime. The Conservatives have not won a seat under Duhaime’s leadership, but they are expected to make a breakthrough in the Quebec City area that could give them the balance of power if no party wins a majority in the legislature. The leaders crossed the province during the 39-day campaign, which was dominated by questions of economic uncertainty, cost of living and the looming prospect of a third sovereignty referendum. Élections Québec says about a quarter of voters have already cast their ballots in advance polling. Polls close across the province at 8 p.m. Follow along for the latest updates: Having trouble seeing live updates? Click here to view this article on CTVNews.ca.
