Tornado researchers have confirmed that a tornado touched down in the Kemptville area last weekend. According to Western University’s Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), an investigation revealed that an EF0 tornado touched down north of the eastern Ontario community, between County Road 44 and Honour Way, on Sunday, Aug. 2. An EF0 tornado is the weakest on the six-point Enhanced Fujita scale, which is used to measure the intensity of tornados. The researchers say there were no reported injuries, although a survey of the area confirmed that trees and fields had been damaged by the tornado. The NTP says the tree damage indicates the tornado reached a maximum wind speed of 115 km/h and travelled northeast over an 80-metre-wide and 1.18-kilometre-long path. The NTP launched their investigation into the weather incident earlier this week after receiving reports of the damage. A yellow-level rainfall warning was issued for the are on Aug. 2, though no tornado warnings were issued. The NTP says there have been 88 tornadoes across Canada and nine in Ontario so far this year.
