Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of the GTA, warning storms could develop this afternoon bringing strong winds, large hail and heavy rain. The weather agency issued the warning just before 12 p.m. warning that wind gusts could reach 90 km/h, with “quarter-size hail” and heavy rainfall also possible. Toronto, Peel region, York region, Durham region, Halton and Hamilton are all placed under a “Yellow alert.” Officials say the storms could also lead to utility outages and are urging people to secure loose objects and move indoors if threatening weather approaches. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the agency wrote, noting that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Emergency Management Ontario recommends taking cover immediately if severe weather approaches. “Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain,” officials added.
