A simple traffic stop spiraled into much more Monday morning after a driver led police on an extended chase that left city limits. At around 1 a.m. on Monday, officers with the Regina Police Service attempted to stop a vehicle on the 1300 block of Robinson Street. However, the driver failed to stop and fled the area at what police called a “high rate of speed.” The RPS Aerial Support Unit, or police plane, tracked the vehicle as it travelled across the city, eventually making its way eastbound on Highway 1 towards Moose Jaw. At this point, police from Moose Jaw joined the fray, deploying a tire deflation device on the highway. It was ultimately unsuccessful, as the driver turned around before reaching that point of the highway, and headed back to Regina. Travelling back and re-entering city limits, the driver hit a spike strip deployed by RPS. The vehicle continued on for a short while before coming to a stop. Officers arrested the driver during a “high-risk traffic stop.” The 34-year-old man faces three charges, including operating a vehicle dangerous to the public, fleeing from police and being unlawfully at large. He made his first court appearance Monday morning.
