Some of the top competitors in dog obedience made their way to the Caledonian Curling Club on Saturday for annual trials. The host, the Regina Kennel and Obedience Club, is celebrating their 110th anniversary. Travelling from Stoney Creek, Ont., judge Lorraine Purnell has been impressed with the talent in the rallies. “To come in and see a bull mastiff competing, Staffordshire terriers and all the sheepdogs, it’s not just the normal golden retrievers and German shepherds, it’s been a great trial,” she said. Common dog breeds spotted in competition were herding dogs such as Shetland sheepdogs and border collies. Purnell said a variety of breeds have succeeded, with about 10-15 dogs scoring a perfect 10/10 as of Saturday afternoon. “There’s quite a lot of other ones that have done well,” she said. “The sheepdog is brains and beauty, like a lot of some of the other breeds that are in conformation and obedience as well, it’s nice to see.” There are around 200 dogs competing this weekend. A judge of 16 years and competitor herself, she says it’s another example of dog obedience increasing in popularity. “People love to bond with their dogs, and some of them like to be competitive in it,” said Purnell. “Rally is very good for bonding; obedience is a little more regimented and the conformation is for their looks and their stature.” The competition will continue on Sunday, with conformation junior handling.
