More than two years since it launched, the Regina Street Team has officially ended its operations. According to a report for Wednesday’s executive committee meeting, the community outreach team has ceased its operations as of Aug. 31, 2026, and its work will be replaced by another organization that is currently negotiating an agreement with the city. However, the City of Regina stresses that it did not decide to disband the Regina Street Team. “The City temporarily oversaw operations of the Regina Street Team once it was no longer being operated by the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District in late 2025. The Regina Street Team temporarily moved to the YWCA in March 2026,” the city told CTV News in an emailed statement. The city added it put out a call for applications for a community outreach team grant in June, which would continue the team’s work and anticipates making an announcement in September. “YWCA Regina agreed to provide temporary administrative oversight of the Regina Street Team at the request of the City of Regina while they worked to determine a permanent home for the program,” said the YWCA in another emailed statement. “As that arrangement was always intended to be short term, decisions about why the program is transitioning to a new Community Outreach Team and who will deliver it rest with the City.” According to the report, the Government of Saskatchewan has approached the city about providing nearly $2.04 million in annualized funding to tackle homelessness. This specific initiative entails allocating support for the operation of extreme weather spaces and community-led outreach initiatives that support those experiencing homelessness. Should executive committee and city council ultimately decide to approve the recommendation, the city would receive the money this year for 2026 and 2027 operations, with a chance for renewed funding pending an annual review. City administration proposed using the funds to organizations like the Nēwo Yōtina Friendship Centre, All Nations Hope, Carmichael Outreach and the new community outreach group that will replace the Street Team. The City of Regina could find itself eligible for the provincial funding for up to five years. The Regina Street Team first launched in 2024 as a continuation of the Downtown Regina Community Support Program. Federal transit funding Executive committee is also expected to discuss a conditionally approved agreement that would give Regina up to $24.03 million over the next 10 years through the federal Canada Public Transit Fund. The city would need to contribute $3.6 million annually on its end to receive the maximum baseline funding.
