A new bylaw aimed at improving safety and outlining acceptable behaviour on Saskatoon buses is officially in effect. The Saskatoon Transit Bylaw, approved late last month, establishes rules governing fare payment, disruptive behaviour and animals allowed on board. The bylaw sets clear rules for customer conduct and the use of Saskatoon Transit property, including paying required fares, avoiding smoking, vaping, alcohol and drug use on Transit property, among other rules and regulations. Saskatoon police and transit supervisors will enforce the rules, with the new bylaw authorizing officers to remove people from transit property, impose temporary bans and issue $50 tickets. According to a media release from the City, “the focus is on education, awareness and compliance, with enforcement tools available when needed.” The City says in the last three years, fare evasion has more than tripled. There were 131,532 incidents in 2024 compared to 41,923 in 2023. Administration says that figure likely represents a conservative estimate. The City estimates lost revenue to fare evasion in 2024 was $394,596. Riders may be asked to show proof they paid their fare. Those who pay with cash are asked to keep the receipt provided by the operator. Those using smart cards or mobile tickets should have them ready if proof of payment is requested. Transit Supervisors and Saskatoon Police Service officers will have handheld scanners to verify payment. Full details of the new bylaw can be found here.
