Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash in North York early Saturday morning. In a post to social media, Toronto police say officers responded to the are of Romfield Lane and Finch Avenue West just before 5 a.m. Speaking to reporters, Duty Insp. Peter Wallace said a 39-year-old man was driving the vehicle with a 42-year-old male passenger when it struck the light pole. Emergency personnel arrived and began life-saving measures, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially said that the impact completely knocked down the traffic light pole and deployed the vehicle’s airbags. “This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased,” Wallace said. The intersection remains closed while police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Was speed was a factor? Wallace said it is still too early in the investigation to determine what caused the crash. “We’re at our early stage of the investigation right now, and that’s why we have our reconstruction unit, and that will be determined whether or not speed was a factor,” he said. adding that the posted speed limit in the area is 60 km/h. Wallace said his understanding is that the road was dry at the time of the crash. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area while the investigation continues. Police issue road-safety warning Wallace also urged drivers, pedestrians and other road users to exercise caution as summer comes to an end this weekend. He noted that pedestrians wearing dark clothing can be difficult for drivers to see during the late evening and early morning hours. He also urged drivers to be especially careful when making right turns. Police say three pedestrians have been struck by vehicles over the last few days, making public safety a key concern. “As we approach the end of summer, we are appealing to motorists, drivers, and pedestrians to be careful,” Wallace said..
