A hunter in northern B.C. has been fined $5,000 for killing a caribou out of season. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says the animal, described as a “mature bull,” was discovered along Jade Boulder Road in the Dease Lake area. A conservation officer on a remote ATV patrol found the caribou, which was in an area closed to hunting. Julian Starr pleaded guilty to killing wildlife at a time not in the open season, a violation of B.C.’s Wildlife Act. The sentencing also included the forfeiture of the caribou, along with several other conditions. The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation will receive $4,999 of the penalty. In a social media post Monday, the BCCOS thanked the Tahltan Nation for their support with the investigation, and reminded hunters to follow all regulations.
